The 10 Best Battery-Powered Lawn Mowers 2020

1. Greenworks 25322 Lawn Mower – Best Overall

Greenworks 25322

For best overall performance and reliability, the Greenworks cordless lawn mower takes our top ranked spot. Ideal for small to medium yards, you can maneuver the 16-inch cutting deck around your yard with ease. Plus, you can set the height of your cutting range from a close 1 ¼ inch to a generous 3 3/8 inch. We found that this mower makes an even cut at whichever setting you choose.

This lawn mower is powered by a G-MAX 40V 4Ah Li-Ion Battery and is part of Greenworks complete yard work system. You should be able to mow your smaller lawn in one charge. We did discover that some owners had difficulty with the charger working properly.

The additional features propelled this mower to the top of our list. You can use the 2-in-1 bagging and mulching system like a vacuum for grass clippings. And the convenient folding handle gives you easier storage and the ability to mow under low branches.

Pros
  • 16-inch cutting deck
  • Adjustable cutting height range
  • Battery compatible with a system
  • 2-in-1 bagging and mulching component
  • Folding handle
Cons
  • Some issues with battery charging

2. BLACK+DECKER 3-in-1 Lawn Mower – Best Value

BLACK+DECKER 3-in-1 Lawn Mower

For the best battery powered lawn mower for the money, choose the Black and Decker 3-in-1 lawn mower. You can save money by buying only one machine to do the work of three. Mow, trim and edge your small property with one tool. Plus, we found switching back and forth to be simple and quick.

Two 20 volt MAX lithium ion rechargeable batteries power this 3-in-1 mower. While it claims to continue to be powered for up to 750 square feet, we found it may be much less.

You’ll find this 3-in-1 tool lightweight, small to store and easy to use with an ergonomic handle. With the mower, you can adjust the cutting heights from 1.6 inches to 2.4 inches as you cover a 12-inch cutting swath.

Pros
  • Best value
  • Mow, trim and edge
  • Lightweight and easy to store
  • Ergonomic handle
  • 2 Adjustable cutting heights
Cons
  • Short battery life

3. Makita XML03PT1 Lawn Mower – Premium Choice

Makita XML03PT1

The optimal battery power on the Makita lawn mower makes it our premium choice. You’ll cut your yard faster with the Makita’s Bl Brushless motor which runs the cutting blades between 2,500 and 3,300 rpm. Plus, you’ll notice the sturdiness and the heft of this mower which is constructed with a heavy steel deck. And, even by battery powered standards, we found this mower to run so quietly you could mow any time of day without disturbing your neighbors.

Other premium features you’ll enjoy are ten different cutting heights, folding handles and Makita’s extreme Protection Technology (XPT) to guard against harsh conditions. Keep in mind, all these extras do increase the price significantly.

The battery on this mower is part of Makita’s system of batteries. Be aware, some owners felt the battery life did not live up to their expectations.

Pros
  • Optimal battery power
  • Sturdy with heavy steel deck
  • Runs extremely quietly
  • Ten adjustable cutting heights
  • Folding handles
  • Extreme Protection Technology
Cons
  • Higher price
  • Limited battery life

4. Sun Joe Cordless Lawn Mower

Sun Joe MJ401C-PRO

If you’re looking for a lightweight, inexpensive, get-the-job-done mower and you have a small to medium yard, the Sun Joe cordless push lawn mower may be one of your top choices. You’ll finish mowing quickly with the Sun Joe’s 14-inch-wide path. And, you can adjust the cutting height manually into three different positions. When you’re done mowing, detach the grass catch and dispose the clippings.

The 28 V 4 Ah rechargeable lithium-ion battery takes a few hours to charge. If your lawn is dry and not too high, we found you should be able to complete your full yard without stopping. However, if you need this mower to take on a more challenging thicker, wetter lawn, you’ll have to set extra time aside to recharge the battery at least once or twice.

Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Inexpensive
  • 14-inch-wide cutting path
  • 3 Adjustable cutting heights
  • Detachable grass catch
Cons
  • Less efficient on wet, thick lawns
  • Insufficient battery life

5. EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower

EGO Power+LM2000-S

Made with weather-resistant construction, the Ego cordless lawn mower takes our fifth spot because there’s a lot to like about this mower.

You’ll be able to make fewer passes with the 20-inch cutting capacity. In addition, the 3-in-1 component allows you to choose between mulching, bagging and side discharge. Other convenient features on this mower include a foldable design for easier storage. Plus, the mower comes with LED headlights and is so quiet, you’ll have the option to mow in the low light of the early morning or late into the evening.

The battery is compatible with all EGO power+ arc lithium batteries. We found that most owners liked how quickly the batteries recharged and the battery life seemed sufficient. However, in the event the battery died, we discovered that Ego left much to be desired with customer service and honoring their warranty.

Pros
  • 20-inch cutting capacity
  • 3-in-1 mulching, bagging or side discharge
  • Foldable design for easy storage
  • LED lights
  • Quiet to run
Cons
  • Poor customer service
  • May not honor warranty

6. Snapper XD Lawn Mower

Snapper XD 82V

You’ll notice right away the extra details that add convenience and comfort when using the Snapper lawn mower. The nineteen-inch steel mowing deck helps you get done quicker. Plus, the 3 in 1 design either mulches, bags or discharges grass clippings out the side. And you’ll save room in your garage or shed with Snapper’s compact vertical storage capability.

This mower also offers easy-to-reach touch points including a push button start and a single-lever to adjust your preferred cutting height to a choice of seven different settings. One unique feature is the load sensing technology that adjusts the cutting blades as you encounter different demands throughout your yard.

As for potential issues, we learned the battery life may not live up to its claim of lasting a full 45 minutes. However, we did discover the rapid charger does work fast. And finally, we found that this mower does not operate as quietly as other models on our list.

Pros
  • 19-inch Mowing Deck
  • 3-in-1 mulching, bagging, side discharge design
  • Compact vertical storage
  • Easy-to-reach controls
  • 7 adjustable cutting heights
  • Load sensing technology
Cons
  • Possibly insufficient battery life
  • Louder than other mowers on this list

7. WORX WG779 Lawn Mower

WORX WG779

The patented Intellicut technology on the Worx lawn mower is intended to save your battery for when you need the power most. Instead of continuously draining your battery at a steady pace, this technology supplies the extra boost only when it’s needed. Plus, the indicators on the Dual 20V power share batteries and on the mower allow you see your level of charge.

Unfortunately, from our research we found that level may decrease faster as you mow than you’d prefer even with the technology.

Well-made with foam padded handles for comfort, the Worx mower offers three cutting heights that can be easily adjusted with a single lever. The 2-in1 design mulches, bags and rear discharges. The grass bag comes with full indicator and a carry handle for convenient disposal. The Worx is a compact mower which may not help you cover a lot of lawn but will help make storage easier.

Pros
  • Charge level indicators on batteries and mower
  • Padded handles for comfort
  • 2-in-1 mulching and bagging with level indicator
  • Compact for easier storage
Cons
  • Battery saving technology not as effective as claims
  • Narrow cutting capacity

8. DEWALT DCMW220P2 Lawn Mower

DEWALT DCMW220P2

For powerful performance and easy storage, the Dewalt lawn mower makes our list. The heavy duty, 20-inch metal deck offers one of the widest cutting capacities of the models we’ve reviewed. And the dual 20V MAX batteries work simultaneously for high power output to run the brushless motor.

Convenient features include a folding handle plus lift handles to help you with transport and storage. You can adjust the height range between 1.5 inches and 3.4 inches with a single lever. Plus, this model also offers the 3-in-1 option of mulching, bagging or rear discharge of grass clippings.

We found two main issues which place the Dewalt toward the bottom of our list. First, the price is much higher than other mowers which offer similar capabilities and features. And second, the battery life doesn’t last nearly as long as it should. We did learn that removing the mulcher pulled less charge from the batteries.

Pros
  • Powerful and heavy duty
  • Folding handle plus lift handles for transport and storage
  • 3-in-1 mulching, bagging and rear discharge
  • Single lever cutting height adjustment
Cons
  • Much higher priced
  • Insufficient battery life

9. CRAFTSMAN 3-in-1 Lawn Mower

CRAFTSMAN V60 CMCMW260P1

With an extra wide 21-inch metal deck built for durability, the Craftsman 3-in-1 lawn mower has a powerful 60V motor and offers mulching, bagging and side discharging. Be aware, we did find that the bagging mode doesn’t contain grass clippings as well as it should.

The V60 5.0Ah battery is compatible with all Craftsman V60 cordless outdoor tools and comes with a Led charge indicator. Unfortunately, the battery life is extremely short. We discovered that rather than mowing a ¼ acre on a single charge, it may take you closer to three recharges. And adding to the inconvenience, recharging takes about three hours each.

Also, this mower does not come with features for comfort or easy storage.

Pros
  • 21-inch extra wide metal deck
  • Powerful 60V motor
  • Battery charge indicator
Cons
  • Poor battery life
  • Long to recharge
  • No comfort features
  • No storage adaptions

10. Scotts Outdoor 61940S Lawn Mower

Scotts Outdoor Power Tools 61940S

While the Scotts Outdoor Power Tools lawn mower offers you plenty in rugged construction, we placed it last on our list for lacking in performance, ease-of-use and battery quality.

With this mower, you do get a durable steel deck with a broad 19-inch cutting width, single lever controlled adjustable cutting height from 1.5 inches to 3.75 inches, 3-in-1 mulching, bagging and side discharge and an adjustable handle for easy storage.

While all those features seem appealing, we discovered that this Scotts lawn mower performed poorly by cutting unevenly resulting having to go over the same patch of grass several times. Also, we found it had limited maneuverability and no comfort features. Depending on your level of strength, you may need to put forth considerable effort to propel it forward. Finally, the battery life did not last long enough and took a while to recharge.

Pros
  • Durable steel deck
  • Broad 19-inch cutting width
  • Adjustable handle for easy storage
Cons
  • Poor cutting performance
  • Lacking in maneuverability
  • No comfort features
  • Short battery life
  • Long recharge time

Buyer’s Guide

Our reviews along with our pros and cons lists hopefully have helped you learn about the top battery powered lawn mowers on the market in 2020. Our buyer’s guide aims to provide you with what you need to know before you decide to invest in this type of mower. Continue reading to gain a better understanding of why it’s worth recharging batteries over refueling with gas and what to look for in a high-quality battery powered lawn mower.

The Perks of Buying Battery Powered

As we mentioned in the introduction, battery powered lawn mowers are beginning to gain in popularity. Improvements in their effectiveness and efficiency plus the knowledge that you’re purchasing a product that’s environmentally friendly have fueled sales. Plus, there’s plenty of reassuring perks that come with trading in your gas-powered lawn mower for a battery powered model.

Mostly likely, right behind saving the environment from harmful emissions, you may list going virtually maintenance free as your next reason for opting for battery power. When you give up a gas engine, you no longer need to take the extra time and effort for tune-ups, oil changes, air filter changes and running to the local gas pump.

On a practical level, battery powered lawn mowers are much lighter than gas-powered models. Since you won’t fatigue as quickly, going with a battery powered may make a big impact on how much mowing you can accomplish. Plus, they’re much easier to start and to maneuver around your lawn. And, finally your ears and your neighbors may thank you for giving up your loud gas-powered lawn mower. Battery-powered models are so quiet, you may be able to mow any time of day without disturbing the peace.

Rechargeable Batteries: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Of course, for all their benefits, battery-powered lawn mowers do have their inconveniences and limitations. From too short battery life to heavy duty tasks, you may run into problems. Despite coming a long way in quality, if you own a large property, or allow your grass to grow long or to become hidden under a thick pile of leaves, a battery powered lawn mower won’t supply enough power.

As you read through the reviews, you may have noticed a common theme of battery life. Rechargeable batteries need to be recharged often and to be charged when you’re ready to use them. Unfortunately, depending on how much charge they can hold, you may not get your lawn completely mowed. In some cases, it may take two or three charges to finish a small to medium yard. And, waiting for the battery or batteries to recharge can take hours.

For best results, be sure to choose a company with a battery system which allows the same battery to work several different products. If you have several batteries charged and ready to go, you’ll only need to stop mowing long enough to swap out the battery. Also, be sure to cross check battery life ratings. Some companies perform better than others.

Finally, be sure to store your batteries properly. Extreme temperatures and wet conditions can impair a battery’s ability to recharge. Also, make sure to take care of the recharging device or station, as well.

How to Choose a High-quality Battery Powered Lawn Mower

Beyond battery life and recharging times, make sure you choose a well-constructed lawn mower with a broad cutting width and adaptable cutting heights. You may have to pay more for comfort, maneuverability and storage capabilities, but these features can make a big difference in your satisfaction of use. And finally, many models offer a system for collecting, mulching and discharging from either the side or the rear of the mower. A high-quality lawn mower will make easy work of the discarding grass clippings.

Conclusion

Our top overall choice is the Greenworks 25322 Cordless Lawn Mower. With a 16-inch cutting deck, adjustable cutting height range, 2-in-1 bagging and mulching component and a folding handle, this mower this mower performs well and holds its battery life. Although, we did find that you may run into issues with recharging, the battery is compatible with other Greenworks products.

The BLACK+DECKER 3-in-1 Lawn Mower is our choice the best value. Save money by skipping buying multiple machines. This one product can mow, trim and edge. Plus, it’s lightweight and easy to use with an ergonomic handle and two adjustable cutting heights. Its only drawback may be a fairly short battery life.

Finally, for optimal battery power and well-built construction, we made the Makita XML03PT1 Lawn Mower our premium choice. Although one of the highest priced mowers on our list, you’ll get plenty in return with optimal battery power, a heavy steel deck, ten adjustable cutting heights, folding handles and Extreme Protection Technology. Plus, this mower runs extremely quietly. However, the battery life could be improved.

Hopefully our reviews combined with the information in our buyer’s guide has helped you to better decide which battery powered lawn mower fits your needs and your budget. By knowing which high-quality battery powered lawn mower to choose, we hope you’ll soon be able to enjoy an environmentally friendly way to maintain your lawn.
