  • The 5 Best Commercial Log Splitters – Reviews 2020

    1. Champion Full Beam Gas Log Splitter – Best Overall

Champion Full Beam Gas Log Splitter

While we reviewed many different log splitters, the Champion Full Beam Gas Log Splitter is by far our favorite. It has 25 tons of splitting capacity thanks to its large 224cc engine. It can convert from a horizontal splitter to a vertical splitter in only a few seconds. This allows you to handle heavy loads and small loads easily. With a 12-second cycle time, it is capable of 300 cycles per hour. We were very surprised by the large amount of power this monster of a machine produces. The auto-return valve is very dependable, which makes it work even faster.

It is towable up to 45 mph and fits into most ATV/UTV towing applications. We loved that it comes with a 2-year limited warranty and lifetime technical support from dedicated experts. You can expect that this log splitter will last a long time. And, if it breaks, you have expert support to help you out.

Set up was also very easy and straightforward. The directions are simple to follow. However, it is so straightforward that you could probably figure it out without the directions (though that isn’t something we recommend, of course)!

    Pros
    • 12-second cycle time
    • 224cc engine
    • Converts from horizontal to vertical
    • Towable up to 45 mph
    • Easy set-up
    Cons
    • Pretty heavy

    2. WEN 56207 Electric Log Splitter – Best Value

    WEN 56207 Electric Log Splitter

Log splitters can be very expensive. Not everyone can spend a few thousand dollars on a log splitter, especially if you’re only using it to split firewood for personal use. For these situations, the WEN 56207 Electric Log Splitter is a great option. As the name suggests, it is electric. This means you don’t have to deal with gas or anything of that sort. You do have to have an outlet nearby, however. You’re giving up portability to avoid paying for gas, basically. It can split logs up to 10 inches in diameter and 20.5 inches in length.

It has a powerful 15A motor that can deliver 13,000 pounds of pressure. This is plenty for most uses, so there is no reason to avoid this log splitter just because it may be a bit less powerful than other options. The log splitter can be used with the 34-inch stand or without it, depending on your situation and preference.

We liked that this log splitter was more environmentally friendly than other options because it runs on electricity. It is also the best commercial log splitters for the money for all these reasons.

    Pros
    • Inexpensive
    • 15A motor
    • Delivers 13,000 pounds of pressure
    • Can be used within or without stand
    • Environmentally friendly
    Cons
    • Not as powerful as other options

    3. YARDMAX Half Beam Gas Log Splitter – Premium Choice

YARDMAX YS2865 Half Beam Gas Log Splitter

On the other hand, for those that have plenty of money to spend or use log splitters regularly, the YARDMAX YS2865 Half Beam Gas Log Splitter is a premium option. It has a 2-way wedge that easily splits large diameter wood into multiple pieces. It is the most powerful option on this list, which is one of the reasons it is our premium choice. It has a unique structural design that uses a U-beam, which is stronger than the typical I-beam design.

The log-spinner footplate rotates logs easily for splitting and reduces stress on the beams. The centrally-located hydraulic reservoir adds a lot of stability to the machine. The metal fenders are included as well. Hydraulic fluid is also included, so there is no need to purchase extra for quite a while!

The main problem with this machine is that it is very expensive. You’re going to be paying quite a bit more than with other log splitters. Because of this, we only recommend it for those that use log splitters regularly. Otherwise, you likely won’t get your money’s worth out of it.

    Pros
    • 2-way wedge
    • U-beam
    • Hydraulic fluid included
    • Stable
    Cons
    • Expensive

    4. Sun Joe LJ602E Electric Log Splitter

Sun Joe LJ602E Electric Log Splitter

Sun Joe makes inexpensive machines. Their Sun Joe LJ602E Electric Log Splitter is no different. It is inexpensive and it’s not absolutely terrible either. It splits logs up to 20.5 inches long and 10 inches wide. This is about average, so it is great for a machine that is this inexpensive. It has a 15A motor like our budget pick. It can produce up to 5 tons of splitting force, which is plenty for most goods. It has a dual-handed safety switch system, which is always a nice plus.

We also liked that it has a steel frame with hydraulic RAM. It is quite portable too thanks to the 6-inch wheel. It is under warranty for 2 years after the purchase date, so you can bet that it is going to last for quite a while.

However, this log splitter will not work in cold temperatures, which is not good at all. You will likely be using it during the winter to split firewood. If it doesn’t work in the cold, this feature makes it nearly useless. The axe also doesn’t have enough power for knots and green pine, which is disappointing.

Lastly, this machine sits very close to the ground, which we found to be minorly annoying.

    Pros
    • 5 tons of splitting power
    • Steel frame
    • Warranty
    Cons
    • Doesn’t work in cold temperatures
    • Not enough power for knots
    • Sits very close to the ground

    5. Boss Industrial EC5T20 Electric Log Splitter

Boss Industrial EC5T20 Electric Log Splitter

Out of all those we reviewed, the Boss Industrial EC5T20 Electric Log Splitter is our least favorite. It seems that there may be problems with quality control. Many customers report that their machine arrived damaged. Whether this occurred in the factory or during the shipping process, we are unsure. However, a log splitter that is broken is not useful in the slightest.

This log splitter cannot split very big logs at all. It can only work on logs that are up to 6 inches large or a little bit bigger. Furthermore, it does not work on uneven ground either. Depending on where you live, this can make using it extremely difficult. The area in which we tested this is very hilly, which makes this log splitter basically worthless. It also isn’t very good for harder woods and seems to be a bit more underpowered than other options.

On a positive note, this log splitter does have a 2-year residential warranty, which is a good sign regarding its durability. If it was going to break quickly, the warranty likely wouldn’t be as long!

    Pros
    • 2-year warranty
    Cons
    • Quality control problems
    • Not suitable for large logs
    • Only works on flat ground
    • Not suitable for harder woods

    Buyer’s Guide

There is a lot that goes into choosing a log splitter. You need to consider what kind of wood you’re splitting, how often you’re using the splitter, and when you’ll be using the splitter. There is no one-size-fits-all choice when it comes to these machines. The one you should purchase depends heavily on your situation and preferences.

Below, we’ll discuss some of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a log splitter. We’ll talk about everything from power to durability.

    Pressure

The amount of pressure a log splitter can create is measured in tonnage. For example, you might read that a particular log splitter can produce 5 tons of power. This has to do with the power of the motor, of course. However, other things like the overall design of the machine also play a role.

The bigger the diameter of the log, the more force it takes to chop it. Furthermore, seasoned wood is easier to cut through than green wood. If you’re cutting green wood, you’re going to need quite a bit of extra force to cut it properly. The type of wood you’re cutting also matters. Hardwoods are denser and will require more force to chop.

Consider what kinds of wood you plan on chopping and choose a log splitter with at least enough power to chop them. In general, more power is better — but you may have to pay extra for it.

    Battery vs. Gas

Gas-powered wood splitters are going to be the most common options on the market. After all, these log splitters are the traditional option, so they seem to be more common. However, as electronics have improved, electric-powered log splitters have become a thing as well. Which option you choose is mostly a matter of personal preference.

Electric options are usually not extremely powerful, which makes them mostly useful for residential work. They also aren’t very portable, since you have to have access to an outlet to power them. They are not usually compatible with batteries, though some battery-powered options might pop up in the future!

Gas-powered options are often more powerful. However, with this extra power, you also have to deal with higher noisy levels and gas. Gas can be messy, and these machines usually require more maintenance. You’ll also have to purchase gas, which can add up over time.

    Cycle Time

The cycle time of a log splitter is how long it takes to cut a single log. You want the cycle time to be as fast as possible, allowing you to cut more pieces in a shorter period. Most log splitters have a cycle time that is measured in seconds. The more powerful a machine, the faster the cycle time usually is. However, this is not always true.

It is important to check the cycle time because many of these machines can be painfully slow. You can walk off, grab a bite to eat, and come back before it is done splitting a log.

    Warranty

The warranty is also something to look at. It isn’t necessarily as important as some other factors. However, if your machine breaks, you’ll be wishing that you had a warranty.

Different companies offer different warranties. Some companies have a company-wide warranty that covers most of their products. Others have warranties that are product-specific. Even if there isn’t an advertised warranty, one still might exist. You sometimes have to delve into the fine print to discover it.

You should also check to see if the warranty is “limited” or not. Limited warranties only cover certain defects. In other words, it won’t cover all the pieces of your log splitter or all types of damage. Some limited warranties are extremely limited and only cover defects at the time you unpack the log splitter.

    How Readily Available Are Parts?

Log splitters take a beating quite often. They’re usually built to withstand it. However, you may have to repair them at some point. They can be quite expensive machines, so you don’t necessarily want to go out and buy a new one every time. Repairing your old one is almost always the best option.

However, you can only do this if parts are available. If parts are nowhere to be found, you aren’t going to be repairing the machine even if you wanted to. Simple fixes can quickly turn into permanent damage if parts and components aren’t available.

    Conclusion

It can be difficult to choose the perfect log splitter. These machines are expensive, so there is a lot of pressure to choose the perfect model the first time! In this article, we hope that we clarified the types of log splitters out there and what model might work best for you.

We recommend the Champion Full Beam Gas Log Splitter. It is powerful enough for most residential chopping and isn’t terribly expensive either.

We also liked the WEN 56207 Electric Log Splitter as a cheaper option. It isn’t quite as powerful as other models, but it is much cheaper.
