A good epoxy coating can make your garage floor more durable and easier to clean. Done well, it can even improve the value of your home. However,this important home improvement project has several pitfalls.
To get the full benefit of an epoxy coating, you need to buy the right materials. We can help with that. We vetted a number of different options to help you find the right one for your needs.
The six epoxy coatings that have made their way onto our list were judged by their durability, appearance, and overall effectiveness. Read on for your garage epoxy reviews.
|Best Overall||Coloredepoxies Clear Resin Coating||
|Best Value||Rust-Oleum Garage Floor Kit||
|Premium Choice||SUPERCOAT Epoxy Floor Coating||
|KILZ Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint||
|ROKREZ Car Garage Epoxy Floor Kit||
First on our list, we look at a high-end three-gallon kit that is designed for a clear, glossy coating. It is a flexible epoxy with numerous applications. In addition to making your floors look better, it will also protect against moisture, as well as mold and mildew.
The coating hardens quickly and will bring out the appearance of your flooring nicely. Each gallon will be able to cover 125-170 square feet of space, though actual numbers will vary depending on how you apply the solution.
It is a pretty expensive package but it will be worth the money you spend.
The Rust-Oleum is our best garage epoxy for the money. You get two gallons worth of product for a very reasonable price.
The material can be applied seamlessly to concrete flooring of all varieties including workshops, garages, and basements. One of the more notable features of this product is that it dries quite quickly. It can be walked on in just 24 hours, and in 48 hours, you can even drive on it.
The two gallons of product can be applied to up to 500 square feet, though user experience will ultimately vary significantly depending on your application style.
It is worth mentioning that the epoxy is extremely thick out of the can. This can make it difficult to apply, especially if you aren’t experienced. Consequently, you probably will not get the 500-square feet of coverage that are advertised.
The Supercoat Epoxy floor coating is a comprehensive kit that comes with everything you need. In addition to the coating itself, the kit also contains attractive flakes that will enhance the appearance of your flooring.
This is a durable coating that is resistant to mildew and water. The solution is designed to be odorless, and the package comes with enough material to cover a space that is around 400-500 square feet in size.
As you may have noticed, this is our premium option. As such, the quality is very high but so is the price. If you are looking for a beautiful product the money will be well spent. However, if you’re trying to stick to a tight budget, this might not be the option you go with.
The Kilz concrete floor paint will be good for buyers on a budget. This material dries very quickly and is good for waterproofing your floor. However, it is not nearly as thorough as the other options on our list.
The epoxy here will create a glossy finish on your floor that looks decent and prevents the accumulation of excessive moisture.
However, it will not enhance the appearance of your flooring the way that other epoxies will. It also is not nearly as durable. While a full epoxy kit can be effective for many years, this is something that you will probably need to reapply regularly.
The Rokerz is a complete garage floor kit. In addition to the sealant, this kit comes with cosmetic flakes and even an instructional DVD that will help you figure out how to apply the epoxy.
This package is designed to treat a 500-square foot space. It is odor-free and slip-resistant. It is also optimized for protecting your floor against mildews and bacteria.
This is one of the more expensive packages on our list, but considering how comprehensive the package is, many will find the money to be well spent.
That said, some users have reported problems. We heard from a few users that claimed their floor began to chip just weeks after the coating was applied.
It is very possible that this is the result of improper application or some other environmental factor that might not be present in your home. Still, it is something to consider.
The Valspar garage floor coating kit is not exactly like the other options on our list. This kit will fortify your floor against moisture and mildew, making it easier to clean up. However, some distinct drawbacks may force you to consider other options.
For one thing, it is not a massive container. The 120 ounces (roughly two gallons) of material will only be able to cover moderately sized garages.
It also is not very durable, and it does not cosmetically enhance your garage at all. If you are looking for something very basic, this might do the trick. However, if you are looking for a traditional epoxy experience, this isn’t the material for you.
And now, here are some handy buying considerations that will help you make your decision easier.
Putting on a good epoxy coating isn’t cheap, even when you do it yourself. However, the benefits, when it is done right, are immense. Epoxy floors are durable, easy to clean, they look great, and they have even been known to raise the value of a home slightly.
However, you should be on the lookout for several red flags. For one thing, if an epoxy coating tends to peel or break over time, you aren’t getting your money’s worth. The same thing is true of epoxies that have a shorter than average life expectancy.
Unfortunately, these are issues you usually don’t encounter unless you’ve used the epoxy. Guides like this one are designed to help you find out what happens after you bring the epoxy home.
Most of the time, an epoxy will advertise how much space it can cover. For example, a gallon container may be rated to cover a 100-square foot surface.
You will want to pay attention to this number, both because it can vary quite substantially, and because it will determine what sort of product you need to buy.
It is always better to buy more than you need to account for spillage and other factors that might account for not getting as much bang for your buck as the manufacturer advertised.
It is best to apply your coating in as short a time frame as possible, which means it is important to avoid emergency trips to the hardware store if at all possible.
As you probably noticed, epoxy is fairly pricey. You may be tempted to go for a bargain option. Indeed, you can get a good product at a decent price (as evidenced by several of the options on our list).
However, you probably won’t want to cut corners with this purchase, either. For as expensive as a high-quality epoxy is, it is nothing compared to the cost of a professional job. To hire a contractor for this task could cost several thousand dollars.
By doing it yourself, you are sharply reducing the overall cost of the process. If you want pro-grade results at a much better price, you will want to make sure that you invest in a good product. It may come with a higher upfront cost, but it will last longer and give you the results that you want.
What exactly does your epoxy do? Is it designed to look good? Or maybe it is optimized for durability, waterproofing, and mildew protection. A great product will be able to do all of this but not all epoxy coatings are the same.
Some will be more cosmetically-oriented, while others will look great and protect your garage floor for the foreseeable future.
The dry time of epoxy can have a big impact on your user experience. Some may take days to dry, while others can be ready in a matter of hours. However, you should bear in mind that not all dry times are the same.
For example, a coating that is ready to be walked on in 24 hours probably will not be ready for driving until much later.
Most packages will advertise their dry times front and center so there is no need for guessing. Always be sure to head the packaging instructions so as not to compromise the integrity of the finish.
As you may have noticed, many of the epoxies on our list featured flakes in the packaging. This component is not absolutely necessary, but it does enhance the appearance of your flooring. Some amateur users have trouble artfully applying flakes to their flooring, but when done properly, they look great and enhance the effect of the entire process.
Epoxy is notoriously pungent during the application process. This can be overwhelming for some people, and the smell may even bleed into the house if the garage is attached to your home.
Some epoxies are designed to be odor-free. If you or someone in your home is sensitive to smells, this is a great feature to have. That said, the smell of even the most pungent epoxy will subside eventually.
Applying garage epoxy can be challenging. If you are going to do it right, you will need to follow a good set of instructions closely. You can, of course, find this online, but it especially handy when the kit you buy comes with guidelines.
For one thing, the manufacturer will know the best way to apply their product, and there may be small variations in the process from unit to unit.
Some of the kits on our list featured instructional DVDs. You don’t necessarily need this feature but it can be very handy to have.
If you’ve read our garage epoxy reviews then you know that there are six good options to choose from. While you will need to decide for yourself which kit is best for your needs, there are a couple of choices that really stand out for a wide range of people.
Our top choice, the Coloredepoxies 10002 Clear Epoxy Resin Coating is going to be great for buyers that are prioritizing quality. However, if budget weighs heavily on your decision you can find plenty of value in our runner-up, the Rust-Oleum 251965 Garage Floor Kit.
