The 10 Best Lawn Mowers Under $300:

1. Greenworks 25322 Cordless Lawn Mower — Best Overall

Greenworks 25322 Cordless Lawn Mower

The Greenworks is a solid battery-powered unit with 5 different cutting heights. It features a cutting height range of 1¼ to 3⅜ inches, and it utilizes two different tire sizes to make the mower easier to handle.

The battery is able to run for 45 minutes, which should give you enough time to cut approximately half an acres worth of grass in optimal conditions.

If you aren’t very handy, it will be worth noting that this lawnmower suffers from a complicated assembly. You may be able to hire out for this, but that will increase the cost.

  • Good cutting heights
  • Easy to handle
  • Solid battery
  • Difficult to assemble

2. Great States Push Reel Lawn Mower — Best Value

Great States 304-14 Push Reel Lawn Mower

The Great States comes in as our best lawn mower under $200 for the money. This is a reel-style mower, which means you power it completely by hand. It features a height range of  ½ to 1¾ inches, and a cutting width of 14 inches.

The blades are made with a treated alloy steel that is designed to stay sharp for a really long time. It also benefits from rubber grips that are made to keep the unit at least moderately comfortable.

Unfortunately, the con is built into the design. Because it is hand-powered, this mower can be truly exhausting to use.

  • Very affordable
  • Decent cutting range
  • Good blades
  • Exhausting to use

3. WORX WG779 Lawn Mower

WORX WG779 Lawn Mower

The Worx is a battery-powered unit that can cut approximately 5,500 square feet off a single charge. The mower benefits from 3 different cutting heights and it comes with an onboard mulching bag that can make it much easier to kill two birds with one stone.

At just 35 pounds, this unit is fairly lightweight (as far as lawnmowers are concerned anyway) and it has a comfort grip that is good for long-term use.

Unfortunately, the battery does not hold up well against adverse conditions. Long or wet grass will kill the battery life super fast. After that, you’ll have to wait hours before you can take another crack at it.

  • Lightweight
  • 3 different cutting heights
  • Mulching bag
  • Battery doesn’t fair well to unfavorable conditions

4. PowerSmart Gas Push Mower

PowerSmart DB8621P Gas Push Mower

The PowerSmart is the first gas push mower featured on our list today. The unit comes with a mulching bag and benefits from a broad 21-inch cutting path that helps you quicken the pace of your work. It features five different cutting heights that make it easy to use in a number of different situations, and it is easy to handle thanks to large hind wheels.

You should note that this can be hard to get around with. At 66 pounds, it is a very heavy mower, and because it isn’t self-propelled, all of the work falls on you.

  • Gas
  • Large cutting path
  • 5 different heights
  • Easy to handle
  • Very difficult to push

5. Lawn-Boy Self Propelled Lawn Mower

Lawn-Boy 17732 Self Propelled Lawn Mower

The Lawn-Boy is a gas-powered lawn mower with a handy self-propelled component. This means that the rear wheels are driven by the motor, which minimizes the amount of work you need to do.

The Lawn-Boy features 6 different cutting heights, and a sizable 21-inch deck that will help you cover a lot of ground in a relatively brief amount of time. It also comes with a mulching bag, and is designed to be low emission. Indeed, this is one of the rare gas-powered lawn tools that are legal in the State of California.

We did notice a fairly considerable design glitch: the back wheels have an extremely difficult time moving backward. This can make the entire unit difficult to handle.

  • Self-propelled
  • 6 cutting heights
  • Large cutting deck
  • Low emission
  • Hard to handle

6. Yard Machines Push Lawn Mower

Yard Machines 11A-B0S5700 Push Lawn Mower

The Yard Machines is a gas-powered unit that has been designed for small to medium-sized yards. The unit mulches, but unfortunately it does not come with, and cannot be fitted for, a bag. The 21-inch cutting width standard to many of the options on our list is good for making quick work of your yard, and the large hind wheels help with handling.

Many users do report that it is difficult to push. It can also be really hard to start requiring many pulls of the cord.

  • 21-inch cutting width
  • Hind wheels for easy handling
  • Hard to push
  • Hard to start

7. Craftsman Self-Propelled Gas Lawn Mower

Craftsman M215 Self-Propelled Gas Powered Lawn Mower

The Craftsman is a self-propelled gas mower. It even benefits from a variable speed setting that allows you to select the appropriate approach for your needs. And, with 6 different height settings, it is well suited for a variety of different situations.

It also makes good use of supersized rear tires. At 11 inches, they are well-equipped for handling uneven terrain.

Keep in mind this isn’t the most powerful option on our list. While a flat backyard shouldn’t be much of a challenge, it will struggle with inclines and thicker grasses.

It can also be very challenging to start.

  • Variable speed
  • Good handling
  • 6 different height settings
  • Not very powerful
  • Challenging to start

8. BLACK+DECKER Cordless Mower

BLACK+DECKER CM2043C Cordless Mower

The Black and Decker is a cordless, electric mower. The unit features a 20-inch cutting deck, multiple height settings, (ranging from  1½ to 4 inches) and large rear tires for enhanced handling.

Unfortunately, the battery may wind up being a real problem for some people. It is advertised as being able to handle ¼ acre, which isn’t an enormous yard to begin with. However, in adverse circumstances (hills, thick or wet grass, etc.) you may wind up with considerably less than that. If you do go with this mower, you will probably find yourself pausing often to recharge the battery.

  • 20-inch cutting deck
  • Decent height range
  • Good handling
  • Mediocre battery

9. Yard Machines Push Gas Lawn Mower

Yard Machines 132cc Push Gas Lawn Mower

The Yard Machines will be good for people that need a gas mower at a really low price. It is simple but will be fine for basic, medium-sized yards. The cutting deck is 20 inches, which should be fine as far as your pace of work is concerned.

It features 3 different cutting heights which is roughly half what you get from many of the other options featured here. However, for the price, some people may not mind. Unfortunately, doesn’t have much in way of power and won’t handle thick grass very well. However, for the right buyer, it represents a good deal.

  • Affordable
  • Very few settings
  • Not very powerful

10. Sun Joe Brushless Cordless Lawn Mower

Sun Joe iON16LM Brushless Cordless Lawn Mower

The Sun Joe is an electric mower that benefits from a dual battery hub. This essentially doubles the amount of run time you get. The mower is rated to treat up to 5,000 square feet of yard at a time. It also comes with a mulching bag for enhanced utility.

Unfortunately, the batteries are not included, and purchasing two may add considerably to the cost. It’s also worth noting that the 5,000 square foot capacity may be sharply reduced depending on circumstance. For example, wet grass or a hilly yard might really reduce that estimation.

  • Dual battery system
  • Batteries sold separately
  • Doesn’t hold up well to adverse situations

Buyer’s Guide

You’ve seen our favorite products, now it’s time to learn a little bit more about what makes them special. Read these handy buying considerations to find out how you can identify the perfect product for your needs!

Power Source

There are three different types of power you are likely to come across with lawnmowers. Each has its own strengths, and weaknesses.

In terms of pure efficiency, gas can’t be beaten. Gas lawnmowers are almost always the most powerful. They are more likely to be self-propelled, and they can go for as long as you have gas on hand.

They also come with some built-in problems. Because they usually use pull cords, they can be difficult to start. They are also very noisy and bad for the environment.

Electric units are great because they run similarly to gas units, but they don’t produce any emissions. Unfortunately, they do have their share of problems as well. For one thing, they usually don’t run for very long. A decent battery is only going to go for 30-45 minutes in the best of circumstances.

If your yard is hilly, or if the grass is thick or wet, the battery won’t run for very long at all. And, once the battery does die, you’re looking at a pause of several hours.

The Power of You

That’s right. Some mowers are entirely powered by you. You push them and your effort activates blades. This is the hardest way to cut grass, and will be very exhausting after a relatively short period of time.

Still, these types of mowers are very affordable, and they don’t produce any emissions at all.

All of the units on our list today are at least relatively affordable. Still, there is clearly a price range. On this list, more money buys more features. For example, it is only our pricier units that come with self-propelled modes of use. You can still get something that works for a good price, but you might wind up having a harder time cutting your grass.

Self Propelled

Self-propelled mode is one of the best features a lawn mower can have. With this feature, the mtor spins the wheels so you exude a lot less effort pushing the mower around.

Cutting Heights

Most lawnmowers feature a range of different cutting heights. This component is important because it allows you to tackle grasses of varying heights. It also helps you to really customize the look of your lawn. Many of the options on our list feature 6 stop points, but you can certainly find even more settings if need be.

Rear Tires

The rear tires determine how well the mower handles. Generally speaking, bigger tires are better suited for handling turns and operating on terrains of varying sizes. If you have a hilly backyard, you are really going to want to invest in something with sizable rear tires.

Cutting Deck

The cutting deck impacts how quickly you are able to cut your lawn. The bigger the deck, the fewer passes you need to take with your mower.

Many of the better units on our list featured a cutting deck of 21-24 inches. However, if you have a smaller yard, you can certainly get by with something that is more compact.

Did one of our lawn mowers under $300 reviews really speak to you? Our hope is that you’ve already found the right product. If not, though, it may help to remember a couple of special picks. Our top choice, the Green Works will be great for buyers that want something high end.

However, if you need to save a little bit more money, you can get a really great deal from our runner up, the Great States.

Fortunately, all 10 of the products are really good at what they do. In other words, you should be happy with whatever product you pick!
