5 Best Mini Wood Lathes – Reviews 2020:

1. Delta Industrial 46-460 Midi Lathe – Best Overall

Delta Industrial 46-460

Our top pick for the best mini wood lathe that you can purchase in 2020 is the Delta Industrial 46-460. This is a top-of-the-line mini wood lathe that we believe to be the best one on the market right now!

As for why this is the case, there are many reasons. One of the most notable things about the Delta Industrial 46-460 is the design. It is a very well-made mini wood lathe and the design is easy to understand and use, while remaining aesthetically pleasing. On top of this, the components that make up the Delta Industrial 46-460 are of exceptional quality. These components are durable, strong, and will last a long time. If you want to purchase a mini wood lathe that will last for decades, then this is definitely the one to pick up.

On top of this, the Delta Industrial 46-460 is an incredibly functional mini wood lathe that performs more than adequately. With immense ease, the Delta Industrial 46-460 provides smooth and fluid results, quickly and effortlessly. Whatever project you plan on using the Delta Industrial 46-460, it will always prove to be more than adequate.

Overall, this is an exceptional tool and it is our top pick for the best mini wood lathe that you can purchase in 2020. If there is one small flaw, it’s that it is very heavy – ninety-seven pounds – and if you need to take it somewhere, that may be a little tricky. But, this is a small price to pay for such an extraordinary product!

  • Very durable components
  • Great design
  • Incredible functionality
  • Easy to use and understand
  • Weighs ninety-seven pounds

2. JET JWL-1221VS Mini Lathe

Our runner-up is the JET JWL-1221VS. This, too, is an exceptional mini wood lathe. Made of fantastic components. Designed with precision and purpose. Great functionality. And it is truly a durable piece of work. However, beyond all of that, there is one big reason that we didn’t put it as our number one.

You see, while the JET JWL-1221VS would normally have been our number-one choice, we simply couldn’t put it in that position because we found that we had a few issues with the motor stopping and then having to wait for a while before it started up again. This happened once, and while it did end up working, the stability of the motor was in question and we had no such problems with the Delta Industrial 46-460. Yes, this is a small and rather arbitrary problem, since it still worked very well, but this begs the question of just how durable the JET JWL-1221VS is, and how long it will last as time goes on.

Other than that, this is an excellent mini wood lathe that has some outstanding functionality and is made of otherwise first-rate components, while retaining a great design that is easy to understand, easy to use, and easy to handle. We highly recommend this one, but do be wary of the motor and any concerns that might come up. If you do decide to purchase this one, we recommend looking into a warranty of some sort.

  • Made of durable components – for the most part
  • Performs its functions well
  • Excellent design
  • Easy to use
  • The motor isn’t the most stable

3. SHOP FOX W1704 Midi Lathe – Best Value

The SHOP FOX W1704 is the best mini wood lathe that you can get, for the money, in 2020. This is an immensely affordable and immensely usable mini wood lathe. It functions very well. It’s made of good, high-quality components and pieces, and it’s generally a pretty great machine. However, there is a reason that it isn’t in our top two places, and this is because of one simple thing.

You see, the design is good, and it’s made of good components that are well-made and well put together. But, it’s not the easiest machine to use, and there are a few design decisions that were made regarding certain pieces that don’t make a lot of sense – we assume they were made for cost reasons – and that end up making the SHOP FOX W1704 a lesser product as a result of being a bit trickier to use.

Don’t get us wrong, this is still an excellent mini wood lathe, but the confusing and convoluted design makes it more difficult to use. That said, for the money, this is definitely the best mini wood lathe that you can purchase in 2020!

  • Super affordable
  • Made of good components
  • Functions very well
  • Convoluted design
  • Difficult to use

4. RIKON 70-100 Mini Lathe

RIKON 70-100

For the most part, the RIKON 70-100 is a decent machine. It works well enough, and the components are of mostly fair quality, and it really isn’t that bad of a machine at all. The thing is, though, it just isn’t that great of one, either. It’s good enough, but not that good. This is due, in part, to two main factors. One of which is that the motor is very clunky and we’ve also heard reports of it dying after two or three uses. The second factor is that it isn’t the easiest machine to use and it really has a convoluted design that is not at all, in any way, shape, or form, intuitive. Using this mini wood lathe is difficult and getting things just right takes far too long.

Overall, though, it has a few things going for it. One of which is the fact that it does work well when you get used to it, and, for the most part, the components are of good quality. But, that doesn’t excuse the fact that a number of very poor design decisions were made when this product was being designed, and the motor doesn’t work very well at all. These two things contribute to a product that may be worthwhile but probably isn’t due to the aforementioned flaws. Again, it might be worth your time, but that is certainly debatable and it may, or may not, be worth it for you to try it out and see.

  • Mostly decent components
  • Works mostly well
  • Poor design choices
  • Clunky to use
  • Bad motor

5. PSI Woodworking Lathe

PSI Woodworking

The PSI Woodworking PENPAL is not a good mini wood lathe at all. Really, there is simply no other way to put it, and it is definitely not worth your time or your money.

While, on the surface, the components may appear to be of rather decent quality, they really aren’t. In fact, when you actually start to use the PSI Woodworking PENPAL, you realize that this is by no means a durable or well-made mini wood lathe at all. The components are of poor quality, and this does not help a mini wood lathe that is, on top of that, poorly designed and poorly thought out.

You see, this is not an easy tool to use. It is clunky and confusing. When you use it, it doesn’t feel right. Nothing is where it should be. And the whole thing feels unfinished and, more or less, completely unusable. How it got taken off the conveyor belt and put into stores is a mystery, because the motor rarely works, it constantly stops for no apparent reason, the components are extremely flimsy and cheap, and it takes forever to actually get it to do what you want it to do. This is the ultimate flaw with the PSI Woodworking PENPAL, it doesn’t even work! For that reason, we recommend that you stay far away from this mini wood lathe.

  • Sometimes it works
  • Rarely works
  • Cheaply made
  • Terrible motor
  • Poorly designed
  • Clunky design

Buyer’s Guide

Above all else, we look for two things in a mini wood lathe. These two factors form the backbone of every good mini wood lathe, and in most cases, every good power tool. These two factors must be in alignment with one another, or else the rest of the mini wood lathe will suffer, producing a mini wood lathe that is simply not very good, not very durable, and not very usable. That is why we have chosen these two factors as the ones we most look for in a mini wood lathe.

First off, there is functionality. Functionality refers to the ability of a mini wood lathe to adequately perform its given function. If it is unable to do so, then there is no point in buying it, because it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do. Simple as that.

However, the best mini wood lathes go beyond that level of simply doing what they’re supposed to do. Instead, they perform their function more than adequately, allowing you to maneuver and to control the mini wood lathe with ease and precision. Not only that, they do so in a beautiful way, allowing for seamless and effortless results to come out of little work and little struggle on your part. And in doing this, they produce fantastic results. That’s the thing. The best mini wood lathes – the best power tools, in general – produce fantastic results with as little effort on your part, because that’s where the mini wood lathe comes in!

This is why functionality is one of our biggest considerations when it comes to assessing the performance and the quality of a mini wood lathe.

Design encompasses many different areas of a mini wood lathe, and one of the biggest ones is simply the ease in which you can use the tool. This is very important, as it makes your job significantly easier and allows for you to create great results in no time at all, with minimal effort, which is very much the purpose of every power tool!

However, design also encompasses the quality of the components themselves, and how durable those components are. When you invest in a power tool, this investment should be for a lot longer than, say, two weeks! With the right components and the right materials, that mini wood lathe will last a long time, and that is a very good thing!

Ultimately, those two factors are what we look for and strongly consider, above all other factors. We recommend that you do the same, for they are very important for a mini wood lathe!

You’ve read our reviews of the best mini wood lathes! Our top pick is the Delta Industrial 46-460, due to its exceptional quality! And, the best mini wood lathe for the money is the SHOP FOX W1704! We’ve found that these two are the pinnacle of mini wood lathes that you can buy right now, in 2020. It can be hard making an informed buying decision about these kinds of things, due to the wide variety of options and choices that are available. We hope that we’ve helped you make the best decision that you can make when it comes to purchasing the right mini wood lathe for you!
