Snowblowers are easily found online, but if you’ve owned a dud before, you know how frustrating it is having spent your hard-earned cash on a machine that’s sitting lifeless while you’re back outside shoveling again.
If you want to relieve yourself of this frustration, read through our reviews of the best snow blowers on the market for wet and heavy snow. We have listed a range of gas snow throwers and one battery-powered snowblower throughout our reviews. They will ensure that when you need snow or ice cleared, they will be there to get it moved.

Reliability usually doesn’t come cheap, especially not for snowblowers. However, the Husqvarna ST227P, 27 in. 254cc Two-Stage Gas Snow Blower is surprisingly affordable for such an impressive machine. It has a large 27-inch wide scoop with a 7.5 horsepower auger that cuts through thick, heavy snow. It can even cut through solid road ice and doesn’t flinch regardless of the surface type it’s clearing.
The chute is easily adjusted, even while you’re driving it. The snow thrower sends the snow a fair distance and can be angled in almost any position right or left and up or down, unlike most chute adjustors. Also, while many snowblowers struggle to turn corners in certain environments, the Husqvarna ST227P has impressive power steering that turns with ease.
On the downside, the instruction manual isn’t as helpful as it could be. There is minor assembly required to set up the snow thrower upon arrival. It isn’t too difficult to figure out, and there is some guidance with the instructions, but it’s not as clear as it should be.
However, the handle grips are heated so you won’t get cold hands driving the machine. Also, the bright LED headlights make any night or blizzard clearing much easier than normal.
There have been issues with the original auger belt breaking. It’s easily replaced, and no one has reported issues after replacing it with a new belt, but this is one unfortunate detail that’s good to keep in mind. Otherwise, there really is no better snow blower to consider for excellent performance, high quality, and affordability.
The PowerSmart DB7624E 24 in. 212cc 2-Stage Gas Snow Blower is the best option you could buy on a small budget. It’s significantly lower-priced than other machines and still cuts through wet, heavy snow easily.
The skid shoes on the scoop are well placed to protect the base of the scraper to ensure it doesn’t get damaged from rocks or uneven surfaces. It can also be adjusted to different heights depending on your required use.
It’s an easy machine to start with either the push of a button or by manual pull-start. The DB7624E is not the most difficult snow thrower to turn, but it doesn’t have any power steering like the Husqvarna ST227P. Therefore, it doesn’t suit someone who’s not comfortable steering with a bit of force rather than simply turning a handle.
There is also no headlight for clearing snow in more difficult-to-see conditions. However, it chews through almost any kind of snow or ice with its powerful two-stage auger and won’t fail to complete jobs. It’s slightly lower-quality than others in our reviews, but still, an excellent choice to consider overall.
If you’re looking for something big and powerful with high-end features, the Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm 30XP 357cc Snow Thrower is your machine. It does cost more than the others in our reviews, but what you get is well worth it.
It has a wide 30-inch clearing range with a powerful 357 cc engine to blast through a huge volume of snow in no time at all. There is no shortage of bells and whistles with this machine, either. The heated handle grips allow you to enjoy the experience outside in the cold, and the power steering will lead you easily through snow without resistance.
The high-impact polymer skids will outlast steel shoes. However, they are also soft enough to protect against ugly scrape marks that steel skids can cause. The headlight can be blocked depending on where you angle the shoot. This is a downside, but it’s generally pretty good and easy to change the chute position.
If you want a premium snow blower that’s at the top of the range in almost every area, we highly recommend this. You do pay for what you get, but as many people have testified, it’s well worth every penny.
The Ariens 921046 Deluxe Gas Snow Blower is a machine that’s quite similar to the Husqvarna ST227P. It’s a similar size and style, but it costs the same price and lacks many of Husqvarna’s features.
However, it is known as one of the most reliable machines on the market. A downside, though, is that it’s louder than other snow throwers, making it less enjoyable to use unless you wear hearing protection. The controls are also not placed as well as the Husqvarna ST227P and other similar snow blowers.
One point that makes the Ariens 921046 stand out is the bright headlight, which does a top job of illuminating your path during difficult-to-see times. Also, the quality of manufacturing is top-notch. There have been no shortcuts in building this machine, and it performs exceptionally well to display this, not to mention that it lasts a long time too.
If you don’t require all the extensive Husqvarna ST227P features and like the Ariens 921046 layout, then we recommend this a machine that you can rely on.
This next machine, the Husqvarna ST224 24-Inch 208cc Snow Blower, is quite a good option on its own. However, it’s a much smaller version of the Husqvarna ST227P, yet it costs about the same price.
It includes a good set of headlights that give you excellent sight. The electric start makes turning it on a breeze, especially when it’s icy cold, and you want to get out there to finish the job simply. It does cut very easily through wet, heavy snow too, making it ideal for any location you need snow cleared.
Yet, while it’s similar to the Husqvarna ST227P, it doesn’t have any power steering to help you turn it. Because the machine is much smaller overall and especially in scoop size, it isn’t too bad to turn; however, this adds to its lack of value, considering it’s no more affordable.
If you like the Husqvarna ST227P, but for some reason, you want a smaller machine, then we recommend the Husqvarna ST224. Otherwise, we consider it a better investment to upgrade for a similar price to the ST227P model.
The Briggs & Stratton 1696619 250cc Snow Blower is a heavy-duty machine that makes wet, heavy snow feel like dry powder. It sits at an intermediate price-range between the Husqvarna ST227P and the PowerSmart DB7624E, and its features sit well between them, too.
It cuts through the snow just as effectively as them both, but it doesn’t have as good chute adjustment, nor hand warmers or power steering. It starts exceptionally easy, having a renowned Briggs & Stratton engine. Also, it has a long warranty on the engine which should give you the peace of mind most people want.
Yet the biggest downside to this snow blower is that Briggs & Stratton do not excel in their customer service. They have good products, but they don’t always like to look after their customers after the sale, which can make life difficult if you experience issues.
The engine also requires more frequent oil changes than other machines, which can be a hassle. However, going above and beyond in maintenance on any kind of machine like a snow blower is a good thing which this product forces you to do.
We don’t recommend this as your first choice of snow blower, but it will most likely serve you well if you like Briggs and Stratton products.
The Poulan Pro PR271, 27 in. 254cc Start Snow Blower is a top-quality snow blower for wet and heavy snow clearing. There is very little wrong with it once it’s set up, but it can be difficult getting the chute aligned correctly at the start.
However, once you have set the chute up properly, everything else is great about this machine, including the diverse chute adjustment range. The heated handgrips keep you warm and toasty, and all of the controls are well placed, making this a comfortable snow thrower to drive.
The headlight is effective and reveals your path clearly. Also, the power steering makes guiding it a one-handed job due to how easy it is to turn around. Yet what brings this snow blower down on our list is that it’s more expensive than most snow blowers, but doesn’t offer any more value than the Husqvarna ST227P.
In fact, it’s known as the Husqvarna ST227P in disguise, but it’s a more expensive machine. If you’re loyal to Poulan Pro, then this may be an excellent choice for you. Otherwise, we recommend you save your money and buy the Husqvarna ST227P. It’s much easier to set up and is a more trusted machine overall.
The last machine in our list of eight reviews is the Snow Joe ION8024-XR Cordless Two-Stage Snow Blower. It sits at a similar price range to the Briggs & Stratton 1696619 250cc Snow Blower, but it runs off batteries instead of a gas engine.
It’s not as powerful as the gas engine machine, but the steel auger still processes about 1000 pounds of snow per minute, which is good for a battery snow thrower. It’s the quietest machine on our list by far, which is ideal for clearing during hours when others are sleeping.
The batteries last a surprisingly long time, it depends on many factors how long, but they aren’t quick to charge, unfortunately. Yet, the cost to charge a battery compared to the cost of gas and engine maintenance makes this significantly more affordable than any engine-run snow thrower.
However, it’s not the best machine for clearing wet and heavy snow. It does cut through it, just much slower than an engine machine, because the auger has less torque than an engine-driven auger.
If you don’t have overly wet and heavy snow or don’t mind clearing at a slower pace, this is a good option to consider, especially with its affordability. Otherwise, we recommend considering one of the other engine-driven machines.
There are plenty of choices to choose from with that many different snow blowers available. Aside from the Snow Joe ION8024-XRP Cordless Two-Stage Snow Blower, all of the machines in the following eight reviews are perfect for wet and heavy snow clearing.
Yet our top pick among the lot is the Husqvarna ST227P, 27 in. 254cc Two-Stage Gas Snow Blower. It not only clears through the type of snow other machines struggle on, but it also has many features like power steering, hand warmers, and diverse four-directional chute adjustment.
If you want to save some coin, the best machine for your money is the PowerSmart DB7624E 24 in. 212cc 2-Stage Gas Snow Blower. It’s an incredibly affordable option without all the bells and whistles, but it clears wet and heavy snow no less effectively. It’s a slightly lower-quality machine, but it’s known to last the distance still and is one we highly recommend.
Thanks for checking out our reviews, we hope you liked them. Feel free to share with us your thoughts on any of these snow blowers you have used.
