Review Summary

Ryobi’s P882 is a pretty predictable outcome of the company’s One+ system. You get a cordless drill, an impact driver and a charger/battery set. Both tools, naturally, are part of One+. The set has a lot of versatility to it, capable of at the same time fulfilling the role of a pretty standard home cordless drill while allowing you to tackle harder tasks like driving screws into decks and in some cases even loosening the lug nuts on your car. If you need both tools, it’s a good deal. If you only need one, however, it’s pretty expensive. We’d also be remiss if we didn’t point out that you can get tools with more powerful motors and batteries that can do both jobs at the same time.

Ryobi P882 tool set

Compact versatility

While this tool set is bigger than a single tool that could fulfill all of its functions, the individual chassis is smaller than the one tool that could do it all. That compacted design means being able to fit those tools in more hard-to-reach spaces, which means, in the long run, it’s actually more versatile than one big tool. Since we’re talking about a cordless drill and an impact driver, we’re talking about being able to do about two-thirds of the jobs you’d need a power tool to do in one set.

Ryobi One+ compatible

The real benefit to the P882 is that it forms a great base to build out your collection of One+ tools from. Most jobs around the house you can get done with a cordless drill and — if they need just a little more muscle — an impact driver. This also provides you with the battery and charger that other One+ tools need and don’t come with. So if you wanted to convert your workshop to the highly versatile One+ tool family, this is a great way to start.

Need more power? No problem

You could get these tools individually. On the other hand, if you get the full set, and find that you’re in the middle of a job that needs a little more torque than the cordless drill can deliver, you already have it. Just pull the impact driver from your bag, swap batteries and get back to work.

Conclusion

Ryobi’s P882 is a great toolset to get started in the company’s One+ tool system. It provides the basic cordless drill that everyone needs, plus an impact driver for jobs that require a little more muscle. That means, outside a hammer, you can accomplish probably about 65 percent of the basic household tasks that require a tool of some kind. It also offers something to build from if you wanted to consolidate all of your power tools to one line of batteries, and both the drill and driver that come with it are excellent tools in their own right. It’s an expensive kit, and expensive enough that it might give most people pause. It’s also possible to do everything that this set can do with a single combination cordless drill/impact driver. The downside is that whatever you get instead of this set won’t be part of the One+ tool family.
